How much PAMI pays for an in-home caregiver in 2026 and how to apply

PAMI, Argentina's health program for retirees, does help pay for a caregiver. But it's not a fixed amount, it's not for everyone, and you have to know how to ask for it. Here's what actually exists in 2026.

Does PAMI pay for the caregiver?

Partially, and in certain cases. The benefit is called the "Subsidio para auxiliar domiciliario" (in-home aide subsidy), and PAMI defines it as partial financial support to cope with functional dependency. It's not a caregiver sent by PAMI: it's money given to the family to help pay the person who's already providing care, or the one you're about to hire.

Two important things nobody tells you at the PAMI office: it doesn't cover the full cost, and there's no published amount. PAMI's social work team (Equipo Social) sets it based on the level of dependency and the family's situation, using the domestic workers' pay scale (casas particulares) as a reference (in September 2026, ARS 4,185.94 an hour for a live-out caregiver). In practice, families report that it covers some of the hours, not all of them, and that it's renewed after a new evaluation.

Who gets it?

PAMI members who meet both conditions at the same time:

• Having documented functional, physical or cognitive limitations: needing help to get dressed, bathe, eat or get around, or cognitive decline. A medical report has to state this.
• Not having family or community support that can take on the care. A PAMI social worker assesses this, often with a home visit.

That second condition is why many families get turned down even when the dependency is real: if there are adult children nearby who have jobs, the social team may decide there's enough support. That's not a reason not to apply: it's a reason to explain clearly, in the request letter, why that support isn't enough (everyone works full time, they live in another city, they have young kids, there's only one child and they live 400 kilometers away).

What paperwork do you need?

• The member's DNI (national ID).
• PAMI card or most recent pension payment slip.
• An up-to-date specialist medical report, with the diagnosis and level of dependency. The primary care doctor or the specialist (neurologist, geriatrician, orthopedist) writes it.
• Informed consent (a PAMI form, signed by the member or their representative).
• Request letter (PAMI's template form). This is where you describe the family situation in detail.
• If a family member or legal representative is applying: their DNI and proof of the relationship.

How do you apply, step by step?

1. Ask the primary care doctor for the medical report stating the level of dependency. If there's dementia, make sure it says so in those exact words, along with whatever scale they use.
2. Download and fill out the two forms (consent and request letter) from pami.org.ar, under the "Subsidio para auxiliar domiciliario" procedure.
3. Start the application: online (from a phone or computer, with the documents scanned or photographed), through the Mi PAMI app, or at a PAMI office with an appointment booked online.
4. Wait for the social work team's evaluation. There may be a home visit. Have the medication list, recent test results and the caregiver's details (if there already is one) on hand.
5. If it's approved, they'll tell you the amount and how it's paid. Write down the date: it has to be renewed.

If it's denied, ask for the reason in writing. Many denials happen because the medical report was incomplete or the letter didn't explain the lack of family support: you can apply again.

What two other benefits does PAMI offer that almost nobody uses?

Day center. A PAMI benefit for members aged 60 and over. There are two tracks: general (people who are independent or have mild to moderate dependency) and specialized (cognitive decline, Alzheimer's and mild to moderate dementia). The person spends the day with activities and supervision, and goes home to sleep. You apply with a medical report, a social report, a letter and a consent form, at a PAMI office with an appointment or online. For a working family, five days a week covered from 9 to 5 is worth more than any subsidy.

Long-term care home. For members with dependency who have no family able to take on their care and no means to pay for a private one. Spots are limited and the social evaluation is strict, but it exists. You apply at a PAMI office. If what you're looking for is a private care home that accepts PAMI, in the care home directory you can filter by city and ask them directly.

What if my dad has health insurance (obra social) in addition to PAMI?
